A Sense of Belonging (Grace & Space - A Newsletter from the Deconstructing Mamas)

One thing our family is working on is cultivating a sense of belonging. Your family is your first opportunity of belonging, your most important and primal social group. It should be your safest place.

Our girls will go through seasons when they don't belong with different groups, but we hope they will always feel like they belong at home. This may sound easy, but it's not. It's not easy because we are humans living in a home with other humans who are all different. Every day, before our girls get out of the car to walk into school, my husband has started saying something that we hope lays the foundation of belonging. He says, "Remember, you are loved no matter what you do, say or think." Love is the essence of belonging. We hope our girls will remember this truth when they make a mistake - big or small. Or when they choose to believe something different from us. Or when they make a choice we wouldn't make. We hope that at the end of the day, no matter what they've done, said, or thought, they will believe they are loved at home - that they belong at home. We all deserve to be accepted as we are - especially at home. **an excerpt from the book, "A Mother's Guide to Raising Herself" by Sarah Bragg

From the Podcast

One of our favorite conversations was with the very witty and wise Sarah Bragg. This was one episode that struck a nerve with parents who are trying hard to figure out what to do now that their faith is shifting and evolving. The most interesting part was this idea of "taking a smoke break" as a mother...what that means and why it's so important...and it's something lots of us did not see modeled for us in our own childhood and perhaps may be a new concept as we step into this role of parenting.

If you need to catch up and haven't listened to this podcast episode yet, or you want to listen to it again to soak up all its goodness , CHECK IT OUT HERE: TAKE A SMOKE BREAK - SARAH BRAGG
