There was a time when I held the Bible like a rulebook, a weighty text that demanded certainty. But now, I hold it more like a work of art—something layered, textured, and deeply human.

Art invites us to linger. To tilt our heads, squint, and see what we might have missed the first time. It asks us to step closer, take in the brushstrokes, and notice where the light hits. It doesn’t demand we get it right—only that we engage.

What if we approached the Bible like that?

For so many of us coming out of high-control religion, the Bible was weaponized. It was held up as the final word, the unmovable truth, the absolute authority. But history tells a different story—one of scribes and poets, storytellers and mystics, people wrestling with meaning and the divine across centuries. The Bible isn’t a static list of rules but an evolving, living conversation—one we’ve been invited into.

And why? Because our ancestors deemed it sacred. Not in the sense that every word was dropped from the sky in perfection, but sacred in the way art is sacred: because it speaks to something deep in us. Because it was worth preserving, worth telling and retelling, worth writing down.

We don’t have to accept every brushstroke of a painting to be moved by it. We don’t have to agree with every passage in scripture to find meaning in it. We are allowed to wrestle, to reinterpret, to reclaim. And in doing so, we are honoring the hands that passed it down—not by freezing it in time, but by continuing the conversation.

So maybe the question isn’t Do I believe the Bible? but rather What is this ancient text saying to me today?

And maybe that’s enough.

With you in the wondering, Lizz & Esther (author of this)

Our Podcast This Week:

Doubt is another word for imagination. (Liz Charlotte Grant)

Our episode this week is with Liz Charlotte Grant, mom, author of the new brilliant book, Knock at the Sky: Seeking God in Genesis After Losing Faith in the Bible, artist and lover of the Bible. On this episode, we talk with Liz about all things related to seeking God through Scripture even as our faith continues to evolve. We chat through these questions: 1. What made you do a deep dive into Genesis specifically? 2. How do you continue to see Scripture as sacred even when you no longer believe in its literal interpretation?

3. What is a fresh way to read Genesis that moves beyond traditional interpretations and the culture wars?

4. The Old Testament is often the last part of the Bible that people come back to. What beauty and wisdom can we find in these books outside of this vengeful God that many of us have known?

5. What does it look like to view the Bible as a work of art, and how can this perspective reshape our relationship with Scripture and faith?

6. What role has parenting played in your fresh way of viewing Scripture and the ways you’ve re structured your faith?

7. In the process of examining and teasing out our beliefs, how can we teach our children that the seeking itself is the point, and that it’s okay to question sacred texts?

We found Liz to be funny, knowledgeable and ever-so-relatable. We laughed a lot and also dove deep into some difficult questions. We don't take any of it lightly and know your money is valuable and will do our best to steward it well. We get it if you need to drop support from us, but we would gently ask you to consider sticking with us!
